Adopt a Dog

Considering adopting a dog?

Adopting a dog can be one of the most rewarding experiences for you, your family and the dog.

It is important to consider your lifestyle, how a dog will fit into your everyday family life, and how much time you are able to commit to your new canine family member.

Dogs are like fingerprints – each one is very different. You will need to think about how much time you have for walking the dog, playing with and training it, how long your dog might be left alone, and whether you have other pets or young children in your household to consider.

Different dogs and breeds have varying needs and personalities, and this is something to bear in mind to help you find your ideal dog. Bansko Street Dogs will work with you to help you decide which dog might be most suitable for your circumstances.

We ask that everyone looking to adopt has given it plenty of thought, and is open to the suggestions of potential matches. There are a few times you shouldn’t be looking to bring a new dog home, and we ask you to wait until your circumstances change before applying to adopt – when you have or are having a new baby, when you have a new animal at home who already needs time to settle, when you are already having issues with an animal at home, or when you are moving house. When everything is settled and you are able to welcome a new dog as part of your family, we would of course then love to hear from you!

Once you have decided to open up your home to a dog, the process is as follows:

Contact us

First of all please begin an application, so that we can get a feel for what may be right for you. We’ll review all of the information, and be in touch with questions. You’ll be asked to send through videos of what we want to see at your home.

Video call

All being well with what we’ve been told and seen, we’ll schedule a video call with you. All adults in the home need to be available for around an hour.

Home visit

If the interview goes well and we’re excited to welcome you as an adopter of one of our dogs, we’ll reach out to your referee and arrange an in person home visit too. Once your home check has been approved we can answer any further questions you have, and move forwards to reserving your dog!

Home time

This is the exciting bit. We will make the arrangements for the adoption paperwork, and transport of your dog. We will help and advise in all aspects of bringing your new dog home, and of course stay in touch to ensure that all is working out. We want to make sure that you and the dog are settling well, so we will follow up with messages, calls, and visits as are necessary. Any problems, questions or concerns can be dealt with, and you can contact us at any time if you do have any questions regarding your new arrival.

All of our dogs are vaccinated, microchipped, disease checked and neutered (or in the case of the younger ones, an agreement is signed to ensure the dog will be neutered within an agreed timescale). They have regular health checks, and will be checked again before they leave us. Any health issues or concerns will be disclosed before an adoption takes place. Your dog will arrive with the relevant paperwork and their pet passport, so you can easily keep track of their health status and treatments.
